  • reminiscing...

Spoke to my Canadian auntie today, got me thinking about how much I miss O Canada :) Trawled through my older posts and revisited those "inspiration" photos I came across while researching.

Thought it'd be fun to compare those HDR'd photos with what we actually saw... so here it is:

    Lake Louise, Alberta - Inspiration

    Lake Louise, Alberta - Actual

Lake O'Hara, British Columbia - Inspiration

Lake O'Hara, British Columbia - Actual

    Quebec City, Quebec - Inspiration

Quebec City, Quebec - Actual (we didnt get to take a picture from the angle like the inspiration pic... but we got to wander around in the quaint little streets!)

    Stanley Park, Vancouver - Inspiration

    Niagara Falls, Ontario - Inspiration

:) In the post where I posted these pix, I was worried that because of the internet and availability of information... I might be disappointed that the reality does not match the "inspiration"....

Thinking back.... I was definitely not disappointed. Not even crappy rainy weather can dampen its beauty.

O Canada how I miss you. Will definitely be back soon.

    *sigh*

  • Shiny shiny shiny! :D

After much umm-ing, aah-ing and googling over the last 2 months, we are finally ready to take delivery of our brand spanking new kitchen appliances this week :)

There's just SO much choice out there and I seriously do not know if the availability of information over the internet is really helpful. Conflicting reviews/advice, temptations of better (and a LOT more expensive) models and a limited budget makes it sehr difficult.

Introducing... our FRIDGE! :) Mitsubishi MR-BF390B. I think I will call him Derek.

Fact: Stainless Steel fridges are more sexy
Fact: Bottom-mount freezer fridges are............ better for your back. OK I just prefer them because that's what I have been using all my life x)
Fact: Stainless Steel fridges are more expensive than white fridges
Fact: Bottom-mount freezer fridges are more expensive than top mounts

Therefore, S/S bottom mount fridges = EXXY $___$

As luck has it, we wandered into the Liverpool Bing Lee early this year in search of sale specials and came across the baby version of this fridge and it was love at first sight. Well as much in love as you can be with a fridge anyway. Not only did it fit the S/S bill, it was even cheaper than most white up-side-down fridges! I took a brochure and spent the rest of the afternoon admiring it haha.

BUT for some reason... like seriously NO ONE stocks Mitsubishi fridges besides Mr Bing Lee. This makes research virtually impossible. In fact, most of the Bing Lee stores haven't even heard of this model, let alone have floor stock for us to look at (and we jumped quite a bit from one BL to another hoping to pitch their prices against each other. Did not work all that well lol) Seems like the only way to get it in is to order it in... which of course leaves you in a crappy position to bargain. :(

But alas we looked high and low and could not find another fridge with the looks and a bottom mount freezer that even came close to the price of this. Based on ONE whirlpool forum thread on Mitsubishi fridges in general, we took a leap of faith and bought it sight unseen. Fingers crossed it's not poo.

    COOKING APPLIANCES...
Looking for this stuff is like period pain x10,000. I cannot imagine childbirth being anymore painful than sifting through a billion different variations of ovens/cooktops that all look the same but are probably very different.

I was happy to settle with some bottom of the range appliances of some cheapcheap brands because..... I can neither cook, nor have very discerning taste buds so what's the difference. How high tech an equipment/heat control do you need to make eggs on toast. seriously. Unfortunately Ko disagreed. "This only has two cooking functions, this brand is crap it's got bad reviews blaaaaah blaaaah". Like really, he was probably looking for an oven that can also wash and fold clothes and give you a hug at the end of the day.

In the end, we found a Bosch kitchen bundle on appliances online which was kind of a happy medium - bottom of the range equipment from a slightly better brand. Though for some reason, I've always thought of "matching" kitchen appliances as somewhat of a wanker-y thing to do. No idea why.

We thought the package price was a pretty sweet deal. Until I looked up reviews on a UK website and realised how totally ripped off we are. lol.

  • Before & After - Bathroom & Laundry

    Ni hao, Blog.

The renovator has removed the gross toilet and tiles. We (and by we I meant Ant) has smashed the kitchen into smithereens and the laundry and bathroom has been regrouted and tiles painted.

I went the flower markets this morning (at 6:30am!!!!) to get some flowers for a friend's wedding and realised that the cheap bathroom supply place was right across the road! So popped in and bought a vanity, new shower and basin taps, toilet roll holder and a new towel rack for the grand total of $450. nicht schlecht.

The kitchen/cabinet maker also came by with final design and took a deposit. I bribed him with shifty under the counter cash transaction and put on a whole I AM SO YOUNG AND POOR PLS GIVE ME GOOD PRICE *sad face* thing and he agreed to throw in stone benchtop for the same price as the laminate x) I would like to think of this as a "saving" of $1,150! I is happy.

Never underestimate the power of cash. Especially when hiring Asians xD

    Anyway. Pix time!

Cleaned and regrouted laundry. I will like to eventaully replace that tub with something more stylish. But methinks it will suffice for now. Will sand with emery paper and re-paint sometime in the near future. But for now it's pretty low on the priority list.

Now, behold the power of White Knight tile paint! Sure it looks like painted tiles upon close inspection but still looks a lot cleaner and brighter than the old off-white/weirdly patterend tiles!

The contrast doesn't look like much in photos but really, when you compare it in real life it's quite a transformation :D

Bathroom after cleaning/regrouting. Still need to remove the excess grout but I'm really just too lazy! Will definitely replace them when I can afford to but for now, methinks I can live with it hehe.

Tiling of toilet and kitchen starts on Sunday :) am psycheddddd!!!

Kitchen after Ko hacked at it with a crowbar, a hammer and chisel:

  • (White) Knight in shining armour

It's been a few weeks since the unit settled and we are VERYYYY slowy making some progress on it.

    We have:

    1. removed and regrouted tiles in bathroom and laundry: while it's still ugly 70's tiles it definitely looks a bit better and cleaner

    2. started to repaint the bathroom wall tiles with tile paint. I am quite pleased with how the tile paint looks :) which is surprising ahah! I was anticipating a full on disaster but White Knight saved the day! Will need to sand the first coat of paint and reapply. Hopefully we'll get it done this weekend so I can upload some pix

    3. Re-meshed the flyscreens :) good bye, hole-y flyscreens!

    4. Got a few kitchen and poop-closet quotes and decided on the ppl! :D

It's amazing how long everything takes when you're a n00b. I just keep underestimating the time it takes for us to do stuff hahah. *sigh* even changing the simple flyscreen took me HOURS. Had to keep redoing it cuz I sux. Also needed to do a LOT of cleaning before every task... :(

To do list for this weekend:

    1. DEMOLISH the kitchen >:D Now that we have decided to replace the whole thing, it's time to be VISCIOUS. Will hopefully be attacking the cabinets with some saws, hammers and crowbars this weekend

    2. Sand the bathroom wall tiles and paint 2nd coat

    3. Buy tiles, toilet and vanity :D
